Mosaic Tile for
Your Ultimate Bathroom and Kitchen Walls

By Barbara Tobiasz

Have you ever just stared at a piece of stained glass? Are your eyes transfixed? Can’t seem to move? You seem to be mesmerized at how the colors and patterns seem to be ever changing. This moment is magical and alluring. This phenomenon can have the same effect on your kitchen and bathroom walls. This unique art form is known as mosaic.

Mosaic is the art that consist of a design made of small pieces of colored stone, glass or other materials. It is an art form that has survived for centuries. Mosaic tile design has been decorating architecture since the beginning of recorded history. It can be seen in many locations throughout the world.

Combining the multiple colors and materials for a single tile project can transform your walls into a masterpiece. From the variety of materials that can be used, you have the tools to produce an elaborate, stunning and innovative design that will impress all who witness your creative style. This is versatile and can easily revitalize any wall in any bathroom or kitchen.

Designs done in mosaic tile art sometimes include people, scenes from nature, the bible, animals and patterns, but are not limited to these. These designs always have texture, depth and sometimes roughness. Some are wall mounted mosaics applied to boards and hung as wall art while others are directly applied to the walls with grout holding it together.

The quality of your mosaic depends on the quality of the tiles and stones that are used. You should strive for high quality tile and choose a unique design to capture your personality for the final look. When you choose to have mosaic wall tile, it will add a degree of elegance that you can’t find with any other decorative touch. Mosaic tile is produced with the purpose of expressing creative ideas and imagination.

Before you get started you have two choices. Choose a design that will fit in with the room or you can design the room around the mosaic tile. If you are going to do this yourself you must be aware that the tiles need to be cut. A tile nipper is used for ceramic and other stones and a glass cutter is needed for glass mosaic tile. Most have ridges on the mesh backing so that the glue bonds more securely to the tile.

From people that have never done mosaic wall tiling before, I have been told, once you get started it is quick and easy. The results are dramatic, exhilarating and extremely eye appealing.

On numerous websites there are companies that have software programs which allow you to import an image and it will create the image into a mosaic design. These websites will also supply you with a list of material needed to finish the project.

Do not worry if you are not artistic. They make it as easy as a paint by number picture. When completed you will truly feel like a Picasso or at least, a professional.

To most consumers mosaic tiles have an association of affluence and wealth. To our surprise they are more inexpensive to purchase then most other forms of tile. They also add value to your home and can be considered a worthy investment.

Here are a couple of themes to help assist you in the right direction. Ultimately you are the only one who knows what suits your personality best. For a contemporary design keep things simple so you can achieve sleek clean lines. For an old world theme use chipped or worn hand painted tiles with muted earth tones or subtle golds. Tiles that appear authentically aged will convey feelings of warmth.

When the job has been completed, you will gaze at the finished project with pride and you will be unable to glance away just as you did with the stained glass.
